Who in the World is Philip Humber?

Phillip Humber's name is going to be on the front page of every sports page in the country for his accomplishment, and after readers discover what he accomplished they will all likely say the same thing.

Who in the world is Philip Humber?

On a nice Saturday afternoon in Seattle, a 29-year-old pitcher from Nacogdoches, Texas, managed to etch his name in history right next to guys like Cy Young, Don Larsen, Catfish Hunter, Kenny Rogers, David Wells, Randy Johnson, Dallas Braden, and Roy Halladay.

The Seattle Mariners sent 27 batters to face Humber. He responded by retiring all 27 to become only the 21st pitcher in MLB history to record a perfect game (19th in the modern era).

Up till this point in his career Humber has not been known for much of anything. He was drafted out of Rice where he spent three solid seasons pitching for the Owls. The Mets saw enough to take him with the third pick of the 2004 draft, but then he never amounted to much there, pitching just nine innings over two seasons before being dealt to the Minnesota Twins along with three other guys for Johan Santana.

His time with the Twins didn't amount to much either. In two seasons he pitched just under 21 innings. They let him go after the 2009 season. Kansas City picked him up for the 2010 season. While there he actually got to start a game and recorded a pair of wins and a hold in relief.

The Royals ditched him after the 2010 season. Oakland gave him a chance, but cut him loose pretty quick. The Chicago White Sox picked him up in January 2011. He eventually became a regular part of the starting rotation and posted a 9-9 record last season; nothing remarkable, but good enough to earn a spot in 2012.

Where he promptly threw the 21st perfect game in MLB history making the 22 percent of fantasy baseball owners on CBS Sportsline that started him very happy.
