Minority groups all throughout history have had to deal with being stereotyped by the majority population. They are often caricatured as less than human and ridiculed. But what if you think you aren't human? That's what a new paper about real life vampires by D.J. Williams, director of social work at Idaho State University, looks to examine. According to his study, vampires fear disclosing their blood sucking practices to doctors and other health care professionals for fear of being ridiculed or stereotyped for their behavior. They believe that they NEED to drink blood for the energy. It's like a Red Bull when you are working late on a project except they need it for life. Williams said of the vampire community,
"Most vampires believe they were born that way; they don't choose this. The real vampire community seems to be a conscientious and ethical one."
Perhaps. It seems strange to me that a vampire would even go to a doctor. I mean, aren't you undead? Maybe you'd go to a coroner but there is no real need to seek out an internist. Unless, of course, Williams is talking to freak show humans that like to pretend to be vampires. If that is the case I can diagnose them with acute lameness. I'm no doctor but that's my diagnosis.
