Depending upon whom you ask, tonight's episode of The X-Files is either the season finale or the last time we'll see Mulder and Scully on screen together. Or both. Who knows yet? Gillian Anderson has stated that she's done after this season, but will they pull a reverse of the Doggett years and continue with just Mulder and some cut-rate Gillian lookalike.
For my money, as a long-time fan of the series, they should just thrown in the towel after this. If there's one thing that's been proven time and again, it's that no one cares about The X-Files unless Mulder and Scully are in it together. As good a job as Robert Patrick did being a discount Mulder, no one wants a discount Scully like Christina Hendricks coming in and taking over. Ain't nobody got time for that.
I'm glad that Mulder and Scully got two more abbreviated seasons to wrap things up and that we didn't go out on 2008's categorically awful movie I Want to Believe. That was some world class horse hockey, so at the very least, they're not going out on the franchise low point. The season 11 finale, which may prove to be the series finale, airs tonight on Fox.
