The problem with comic book movies today, according to Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, is that they're too much gosh durn fun. Too many yuks and not enough brooding men in cgi spandex. Don't despair, all three of you who agree with him, as his upcoming reboot of Spawn is gonna be dark and mirthless and full of all the grimdark contemplation we've been sorely lacking since Batman v Superman came out.
While speaking with Nerdist, McFarlane promised his film was going to come out of a corner of the superhero sandbox nobody wants to play in right now. The one where that weird kid took a shit that time and now no one plays there. That one.
McFarlane said that he wants to "go in a different corner that nobody is touching right now" by introducing a character that is a "deeply serious, dark, and almost disturbing R version of a superhero character".
"There’s no joy. There’s gonna be no fun lines in it, and it’s just gonna be this dark, ugly two hours worth of movie, which is essentially what a lot of supernatural/horror movies are anyway", explained McFarlane when asked to define the kind of movie that Spawn will be. He then contrasts his upcoming movie to the Avengers films, saying that fun lines aren't part of a horror movie and neither will they be in Spawn.
"There’s not a lot of funny in them[horror movies]. And that seems to be a weird hurdle for a lot of people in this city to get over because they sort of go into a superhero/Avengers default all the time" [h/t Comic Book Movie]
Christ almighty, we get it dude, you're a creep. You use words like "corner" and "touching" in such close proximity it makes me uncomfortable. There's such a thing as middle ground, Todd. You don't have to go a full 180 from everything else. You're ignoring 179 degrees of difference by doing that.
This is good to know up front, though, that we don't have to bother with this movie. Glad to know I don't have to waste another minute of my time looking forward to this.
