The decision to make a mainstream screwball romantic comedy called Sex Tape was a stroke of pure, unadulterated genius. The actual film could be complete garbage, but every live human male on earth would still consider seeing it simply because the title suggests the entire film is predicated on people who film themselves having sexual intercourse.
Of course, it's highly unlikely that the film will be a complete piece of garbage. Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz play a long-married couple who decide to spice up their marriage by making a sex video on their iPad. Unfortunately, said video gets automatically uploaded to the Cloud and synced with a bunch of iPads they handed out to family and friends as Christmas gifts, at which point hilarity ensues.
Is the plot a little bit of a stretch? Sure. I mean, who in the hell gives an iPad to their mailman for Christmas? Still, the film features some grade-A comedic talent up front in Segel and Diaz, plus it's got a pretty stellar supporting cast that features Rob Lowe, Ellie Kemper, Rob Corddry, and (apparently) Jack Black.
Also, did I mention the whole thing is about a sex tape?
Sex Tape is directed by Jake Kasdan and hits theaters July 25, 2014.
