I happened to have drank the Kool-Aid when it came to the hype leading up to Skyfall's release last November. Maybe my expectation were a little high, but I promptly stuck my fingers down my throat afterwards and made myself puke up all that fruit punch sitting in my stomach in order to have enough room in my diaphragm to take a deep breath and say, 'Meh.' I think a lot of people, the more they thought about it, discovered more and more problems with the movie. But what do we know, it made a gazillion dollars and reassured Bond will continue to smash records into the next decade.
Which is why it came as a shock to many that director Sam Mendes has decided not to return to helm Bond 24. Even though he claimed in interviews that he put everything he ever wanted from a Bond movie into Skyfall, many thought he'd still be back. But as he puts it, 'I have theatre and other commitments, including productions of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and King Lear, that need my complete focus...' Just what the world needs, another version of Willy Wonka. Thanks, Sam, So while Mendes won't be back, we took a serious look at six directors who could actually fill his shoes and pull off another victory lap for 007.
