Michael Garcia - April 22, 2016
Twenty years ago Hollywood gave us one of the greatest alien invasion films of all time: Independence Day. Now, because all Hollywood does is remake old movies or relaunch franchises, we get a sequel in Independence Day: Resurgence. Just like in the real world it's been 20 years since the alien attack. In that time, humanity has banded together and used the alien tech to develop weapons to fight back in case the aliens ever decided to come back. Guess what? The aliens are coming back. Will Smith's character is dead but his son with Vivica A. Fox is now a pilot who will help Jeff Goldblum and Liam Hemsworth fight the aliens. Oh, and Bill Pullman is back too. I can only hope he gives another rousing speech.
The only thing that worries me about this movie is that it looks a little too serious. The original had a lot of humor which is one of the things that made it fun. It had Randy Quaid saving the planet for Christ's sake. But like most movies nowadays this looks ultra-serious and dark. Well, at least a lot of stuff blows up.
