TV & FILM
Michael Garcia - August 24, 2016
The Departed is one of my favorite movies. My friends and I regularly quote the film to each other in thick Boston accents. It's a near perfect film and earned director Martin Scorsese a much deserved Oscar. So it is with some serious trepidation that I report that Amazon is remaking The Departed as a TV show. The new series will be set in modern day Chicago instead of Boston and the infiltrator will go deep undercover in a Latino gang as opposed to the Irish mob. The Departed is itself a remake of the fantastic Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs. But it was done so well. Scorsese isn't even going to be a part of the production. Jason Richman, Warner Bros., and the production company that helped Scorsese create the movie will be involved.
I'm not saying that it isn't going to be good, I'm just saying that I'm wary. How often are remakes any good? Plus I'm going to miss all of the great Boston dialogue. "I'm not a cawp!", "You lace curtain Irish muther__!"
