You know what I loved about John Wick? The relative simplicity of its plot... dangerous hitman is attacked and his dog murdered, hitman seeks vengeance. I always said that the perfect sequel would have been the owner of the dog he essentially takes for his own at the end of the first film came back for his dog. That would've been something.
Little did any of us realize that the first film was just a peek inside a criminal underworld with a Byzantine structure that seems to be making up its own rules as it goes along.
While it was a lot of fun, John Wick: Chapter 2 fell into the Matrix sequel problem of frequent and overly complicated exposition dumps that pop up periodically to further explain the rules of the world in which the film is set. This was doubly ironic due to the presence of Laurence Fishburne in Chapter 2.
Well, it seems like the creators of John Wick: Chapter 3 have decided to double down on the complicated, as the world is getting substantially more convoluted. As reported by Collider, the plot synopsis for Chapter 3 is needlessly complex...
“John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is on the run for two reasons… he’s being hunted for a global $14 million dollar open contract on his life, and for breaking a central rule: taking a life on Continental Hotel grounds. The victim was a member of the High Table who ordered the open contract. John should have already been executed, except the Continental’s manager, Winston, has given him a one-hour grace period before he’s “Excommunicado” – membership revoked, banned from all services and cut off from other members. John uses the service industry to stay alive as he fights and kills his way out of New York City.”
So yeah, there's a lot of goings on in there, but the main thing is that it'll end up with its second half being more or less a real time action escape flick, which I'm totally fine with. As long as they keep the explanations to a minimum and just keep their eyes on the prize, I think this could be Keanu's best trilogy... until they make that third Bill & Ted movie.
John Wick: Chapter 3 opens on May 17, 2019, further proof that no one at Lionsgate knows what they're doing. The first one opened quietly and had long legs in October, the second had a huge debut and fairly long legs in February, and now this one is opening two weeks after Avengers 4, and a week before the live action Aladdin, giving it zero chance at having legs. What is happening over there, guys? Figure it out.
