Susan Sarandon made a statement at the Cannes Film Festival by showing up on the red carpet dressed in a dude's tuxedo and flat shoes. Cannes has had a long tradition of enforcing a dress and heels only policy for women attending their numbingly elitist French film event. Why not protest somebody's invite-only private party by dissing the dress code? Not so much a political statement as just being rude to your hosts. If your Japanese friends made you take your shoes off at the door, you'd oblige and ramble on about your love of the Eastern cultures. You're rubbing elbows with Polanski and a bunch of rich old European dudes with young model concubines. Dress code is where you're making your stand?

The next evening Sarandon remembered that she's sixty-nine and slipped into something a little more generous to her heavily doctored features. Hashtag feminism won't write a check to cover your beach home. Subtly mention to producers how a Steel Magnolia reboot seems like a genius idea. Only men get to be in Marvel movies past thirty.
