As awesome as it would undoubtedly be, it is very unlikely that we'll ever see a film in which Superman battles with the unholy living dead. The DC Universe is a crazy place, but it's not that crazy. Thus, this weekend's battle royale for box office supremacy between Man of Steel and World War Z is as close as we're going to get.
Now, it's obvious that WWZ is not going to beat the record $116 million opening Man of Steel enjoyed last weekend. But it very well could take over the top spot at the box office this weekend. Last night the Brad Pitt zombie apocalypse flick took in $3.6 million domestically, which is a far cry from Superman's $12 million Thursday, but still projects for a better-than-expected opening weekend of $40-$50 million. And that could very well be enough to topple Man of Steel.
So will the son of Jor-El fight off the zombie horde and reign supreme for one more week? Well, in a movie I'd put my money on Superman. If nothing else he could gather them all up into nets and hurl them into deep space, just like he did with the world's nukes in the forgotten classic, Superman IV. But in real life I've got my money on the zombies.
