Just a couple weeks ago I was sitting around in my mom's basement eating Cheetos in my underwear (because that's what bloggers do) and telling my cat how I'm so sick of all of the original movies Hollywood is making these days, and how I wished they would just stop that and only make sequels, remakes, and reboots.
Well, I think my cat might actually be moonlighting as an executive over at Sony Pictures or something, because on Friday they announced that Men in Black 4 and 21 Jump Street 2 have been given the green light. And why not, right? MiB 3 grossed $634 million worldwide, and 21 Jump Street earned $138 million.
Sadly, early reports say Will Smith likely will not be returning to the MiB franchise for a fourth go around. However, it's obviously not because the Fresh Prince of Bel Air is too good for gratuitous sequels. In fact, it's quite the opposite. The guy is already signed on for sequels to I, Robot, Hancock, and, yes, even Bad Boys. So it's probably just that Smith didn't have any more time in his busy sequel-shooting schedule to do MiB 4.
Can the MiB franchise survive without Will Smith? Well, I don't know. But I'll make sure to put in a good word for Jaden Smith with my cat...just in case.
