If there's one truth you need to accept right this moment, it's that eventually Hollywood will come for every single property there is. No matter how obscure or how much you love it, they're going to find it and they're going to commodify it.
None of this is to say that Sonic the Hedgehog is obscure, but Sega's flagship character hasn't had anything even resembling relevance in over a decade. It feels like a movie studio trying to get ahead of a perceived coming nostalgia boom for all the kids who grew up playing Sega Genesis and now have kids of their own.
It was announced a while back that a Sonic the Hedgehog movie was getting made and that X-Men and Westworld's James Marsden was going to star, but that sounded like a project that would surely fall apart before it ever got into production. Deadline now confirms that the project is indeed moving forward at Paramount, and that Jim Carrey will play the villainous Dr. Robotnik—or Dr. Eggman, depending upon your personal preference.
If we're following the thought that mid-90s nostalgia is gonna be huge in the next 18 months, Carrey is the perfect person for this. However, you and I both know that Paul Giamatti was born to play this role. At least he'll have a shot at playing Dr. Wily if and when they get that Mega Man movie going.
