Drew Brees stood his ground with the New Orleans Saints and it finally paid off. Brees has agreed to a $100 million dollar contract, with $40 million guaranteed for next season alone. Yeah, Drew Brees is going to make $40 million dollars for one season.
Brees had said he wouldn't play under the franchise tag, which would have paid him a little more than $16 million for next season. Brees played under the tag his final year in San Diego, and had his shoulder mangled in the last game with nothing guaranteed after that. The Saints still signed him and he ended up leading them to their first ever Super Bowl title in the 2009-10 NFL season.
According to ESPN, the contract will pay Brees $15 million guaranteed the second year, provided they don't release him, and then another $6 million in the third year. If he plays out the full five years, and there's no reason to think he won't, Brees will end up making the full $100 million and be the first player in NFL history to average $20 million per year on a contract.
