Penn State Should Get Busy and Remove That Joe Paterno Statue

The Freeh Report into the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse that he often used facilities at Penn State to perpetrate, is one of the most sickening, depressing and mind boggling things I've read in a long time. How a group of men could cover up what was going on in order to save a college football program from bad publicity is something I will never understand. How they could live with themselves is just as unimaginable.

If Penn State has any guts, they'll take down that statue of Joe Paterno outside Beaver Stadium. It doesn't belong there anymore. Paterno certainly helped a lot of young men who played football for him and received educations. Joe Paterno failed when it came to protecting children because he wanted to protect his program. That is unacceptable, and he should not be celebrated now that the Freeh Report has exposed how Paterno's decision to conceal what was going on allowed Sandusky to keep sexually abusing young boys, many times in PSU locker rooms.

The Freeh Report says 'In order to avoid the consequences of bad publicity, the most powerful leaders at the university -- Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and Curley -- repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky's child abuse.'

That's just horrific. What is wrong with these people? These are leaders of a major university, who showed ZERO regard for the welfare of children who were being sexually assaulted. None.

In fact, after Sandusky retired from coaching in 1999, the report says he was given 'emeritus' rank, giving him access to campus facilities. This was after they knew he had showered with an 11-year-old boy in a locker room there. Not to mention Sandusky didn't meet the normal conditions for being awarded the emeritus rank, but President Spanier promised it, so Sandusky got it.

Everything about this makes me nauseous. Joe Paterno's legacy isn't ruined, it doesn't even exist. Now that statue shouldn't either. Penn State needs to make the right move here and get rid of it.
