Just as HBO wrapped up its latest prestige miniseries, Sharp Objects, they've now cranked up the hype machine for the next one, season three of True Detective. While the show's second season was a major disappointment, it couldn't help but be one coming on the heels of one of the greatest seasons of television ever created.
For season three, writer/creator Nic Pizzolatto gives us our first True Detective of color in Mahershala Ali's Wayne Hays as he gets entangled in “the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.” Stephen Dorff plays Ali's partner Roland West, while Carmen Ejogo (Selma) and Ray Fisher (Justice League) play his wife and son, respectively. Sarah Gadon, Scoot McNairy, and Meryl Streep's daughter Mamie Gummer round out the cast.
You may find this hard to believe, but True Detective will have been off the air for four years when this new season debuts in January, and hopefully Pizzolatto has used that time to get back to what made the first season so great. This trailer certainly looks like a lesson learned and a step in the right direction all at once. True Detective season three premieres on HBO in January, 2019.
