The original Poltergeist was the first horror movie I ever saw, and it scared the bejesus out of me. I honestly don't know what the hell my dad was thinking letting me watch it. At the time I was about the same age as the creepy little blonde girl who gets eaten by the pissed off ghosts in her closet, and afterward I was convinced our house was also built on an old Native American burial ground.
Suffice it to say, I have no idea how terrifying the original actually is. I'll forever view it through the eyes of a seven-year-old. What I can say is that, judging by the first trailer, the Poltergeist remake looks promising.
True, they've swapped Craig T. Nelson for Sam Rockwell and that creepy little ghost whisperer lady (Zelda Rubinstein, may she rest in peace) for a much less creepy dude (Jared Harris). But Sam Rami is the producer, and that man knows how to scare the shit out of people.
Plus, they've kept the most terrifying element of the original—the brother's clown doll—in the remake.
