Pizza and politics don't mix. While on a campaign stop in Fort Pierce, FL, President Obama got a big old man-bear hug from the owner of Big Apple Pizza. Scott Van Nuzer, the physical boundary defying pizza man, picked up the shocked president like he was a screaming toddler at Wal-mart. Way to be on your toes, secret service. What happened next was not really a surprise given the toxic climate of both politics and the internet. Trolls took to the food rating site Yelp to give Big Apple Pizza a bad score because the owner supports Obama. People from clear across the country who have never even come close to Fort Pierce panned the place. Look, vote for whoever you want, believe whatever you want...but for the love of God, leave poor pizza out of it!
What has pizza ever done to you besides make you happy and possibly fat? In my mind there is no finer food on the Earth than pizza. This heavenly starch disk of cheese and tomato is apolitical. A pizza is neither Republican nor Democrat. A pizza doesn't care what color, gender, religion, or sexual orientation you are. Pizza exists for the everyone betterment, a thing of pure democracy. I live in New York City where there is a pizza place every block or two. Everyday I see Wall Street bankers, homeless people, hipsters, old people, and regular working stiffs grabbing a slice at the neighborhood pizza shop. THAT is the America I want to live in. Let's think about what we have in common rather than what separates us. Namely, obesity and love of cheese and bread.
