NFL Teams Combined for a Scoring Record in Week One, What About Week Two?

It's not really a secret that the NFL has become a pass happy league. Rules protecting the quarterbacks and rules limiting what defensive backs can do have helped teams put up video game like numbers over the past couple of seasons. In week one, the NFL collectively scored 791 points, the highest ever for opening week of a season, and the second highest total ever.

Another record set in the opening week was five teams dropping 40+ points on their opponents. Any reason to think that this is going to stop? Not really. Who's going to go nuts in week two? Here are some guesses.

Let's start with tonight's game in Green Bay. The Packers are looking to rebound from their week one loss to San Francisco. The Bears are in town with their new look offense, which happen to have scored 41 last Sunday. This could turn into a shootout. The over/under is at 51.5, and I'd say it goes over.

On Sunday, you've New Orleans vs. Carolina. The Saints scored 32 in their week one loss and gave up 40. The Panthers didn't score much against Tampa Bay, but they should rebound against a surprisingly soft Saints defense. Minnesota should score a lot on Indianapolis, and Andrew Luck could throw for more than 300 yards again for the Colts.

Kansas City gave up over 40 to Atlanta in week one, and Buffalo will look to air it out against the Chiefs. In fact, only a handful of games look like they shouldn't be shootouts.

I doubt Cleveland will generate much offense against Cincinnati, and I don't think Oakland and Miami will be lighting it up on each other in South Florida. The league might not combine for 791 points again, but the way it's looking now, that might be a reachable number week in and week out.
