Whether you're making the first sequel to a movie or the fifteenth, you've got to answer the question, "What can we do that the audience hasn't seen before?" This question—when posed to writer/director Shane Black—received a rather interesting answer that will be paid off in the upcoming film The Predator.
It looks as though the title monsters aren't on earth to hunt humans for sport, but rather to be the first of their species to acquire some sort of macguffin introduced to the story by the kid from Room. It's not a terribly original storyline, but for this franchise, doing anything other than hunting humans for sport is a step in the right direction.
This means the humans are mostly there as an additional obstacle for the Predators. This is basically what Alien vs Predator should have been, only this time I guess it's Predator vs Predator. I like my human characters in these movies quippy, entertaining, and totally expendable. Should Shane Black manage to deliver on this promise, he'll be the first guy to ever pull off the feat in this franchise. No pressure, or anything. Should be a cake walk.
The Predator opens this coming Thursday night, September 13.
