TV & FILM

Steven Spielberg is one of the only directors alive to put out two films in a calendar year multiple times in his career. In 1993 he gave us both Jurassic Park and Schindler's List. Four years later he brought us The Lost World and Amistad. 2005 he cranked out War of the Worlds and Munich, and this year he's giving us Ready Player One just three months after The Post.
The interesting thing about all eight of these films is that they're not short on ambition. The four dramas on that list are all epic in scale, and the four blockbusters are all gigantic visual effects movies. I'm truly curious to see if Ready Player One manages to hit that sweet spot where Spielberg combines nostalgia with a personal narrative driven by its human characters. The trailers and TV spots to date, including the one seen above, point toward a colossal misfire for the director, but there's nothing I love more than being proven wrong by a filmmaker I love and admire.
Despite every reservation I have about this film, I can't help but get super excited by the notion of serious actor Mark Rylance looking and dressing like Weird Al Yankovic. It really brings a smile to my face. Check out the pictures from Empire below...
