If the title sounds a little strange, it's because the situation that the New Orleans Saints are in is a little strange. Since Sean Payton has been suspended for a year the Saints were forced to name an interim head coach.
They did that by naming assistant head coach Joe Vitt to the position, but there was only one problem there; Vitt is suspended too, but just for six games. Essentially what the team needed to do was name an interim for the interim.
The lucky winner for that job is offensive line/ running game coordinator Aaron Kromer.
I appreciate the confidence that Mr. Benson and Mickey (Loomis) have in me to handle this duty while coach Vitt and coach Payton are not with us.
It would have made sense for the Saints to name just one person to step in for Sean Payton this season so that there would be some consistency at the position, but the best man for the job is also facing a suspension.
New defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo was an option having been a head coach for the last few seasons in St. Louis for the Rams. However, having just joined the team he would not be familiar with the team and would require way too much of a learning curve.
Although this will never become public what the team is likely going to do is head coach by committee. Offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. has been the architect of the team's offense since 2006 (as the QB coach and as the OC since 2009). Spagnuolo would be calling the defense anyone, no matter who acts as head coach.
As long as everyone does their role the Saints should be absolutely fine this season.
