Now that Star Wars: Rebels has come to a close, fans eager for more in-depth storytelling from the SW Universe can finally rejoice as Rebels and Clone Wars creator Dave Filoni is taking the helm of the next animated Star Wars series. Star Wars: Resistance will be set in the current saga timeline, 30+ years past Return of the Jedi, marking the first full fledged animated effort set after the original trilogy timeline*.
According to Coming Soon, the series will follow a new group of pilots in the Resistance, but will feature cameos from some familiar voices...
The series centers on Kazuda Xiono, a young pilot recruited by the Resistance and tasked with a top-secret mission to spy on the growing threat of the First Order. It will also feature the beloved droid BB-8 alongside ace pilots, colorful new characters and appearances by fan favorites including Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma, voiced by actors Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, respectively.
For his part, Filoni seems excited by the possibilities presented in doing a show set during "war time" so to speak...
“The idea for ‘Star Wars Resistance’ came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots” said Filoni. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”
The voice cast also includes plenty of voiceover stalwarts, as well as Community's Jim Rash, SNL's Bobby Moynihan, and Scrubs' Donald Faison. Expect the new series to premiere on Disney Channel this fall!
*Check your Wookiepedia kids, Droids was set between Episodes III & IV, while Ewoks ran concurrently with episodes IV & V.
