Once upon a time, James Cameron was going to direct a movie called Battle Angel, but then he fell in an Avatar-sized rabbit hole from which he may never emerge. Fast forward several years and the film is finally seeing the light of day thanks to director Robert Rodriguez, who brings Alita: Battle Angel to theaters on February 6.
Not so long ago, February was just another dumping ground for studios looking to dispose of bombs, but thanks to The LEGO Movie, Kingsman, Deadpool, the various Fifty Shades movies, Get Out, The LEGO Batman Movie, and Black Panther, February can indeed bring out the crowds. Make no mistake, however, as there has been plenty of garbage in that time as well: Jupiter Ascending, The Great Wall, Gods of Egypt, Seventh Son, the list goes on and on.
Alita could go either way, but methinks it'll remind people too much of Valerian, another big budget high concept movie that opened to apathy and closed not long after. There are some great people in the cast, though, including three Oscar winners: Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, and Mahershala Ali. I feel like there's little chance this succeeds in America, opening as it does a week after The LEGO Movie 2 and a week before How to Train Your Dragon 3.
Alita: Battle Angel hits North American theaters on February 14, 2019.
