The more decrepit Ego-gamers among us will remember when 3D games first hit. I was right there, getting scrote deep in the biggest, best and badassiest. Super Mario 64, Metal Gear Solid, Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil… all of those bad boys.

All of these were freaking revolutionary when they first hit, and are still considered some of the greatest games ever committed to CD/chunky-ass cartridge. All of them also, natch, look like utter shit today. What the hell’s up with Solid Snake’s face? Or the elephant man-ish hands of the Final Fantasy VII crew? Oh, the humanity!

In a way, the pixeltastic 2D visuals of older games age far better. They’re still hugely popular in the shady business of emulation, and now these two world are colliding in the most awesome of ways: NES games with 3D backdrops, playable right in your browser.

Yep, there's some real sorcery going on down Vietnam way. As Motherboard reports, 'It's hard to gauge exactly how the emulator works, because it does more than just extend the sprites backwards. Accurate shadowing has been added, and some elements have been rearranged. All we know is that the emulator analyzes roms that have been uploaded to the cloud, magically transforming previously flat gameplay into three-dimensional environments.'

It’s all a little nerdly sounding, but the effect’s pretty great in action. More so in some games than others, but still, take an ogle below. It only works in-browser with Firefox for now, but a downloadable Windows version is coming, we’re told.
