Get ready, everyone, because Steven Spielberg is referencing his own movies in the new trailer for next month's Ready Player One. The most pop culture dense book not written by Chuck Klosterman is coming to the big screen in a few weeks, and this latest trailer is so jam packed with easter eggs that it might make your head explode should you try to find them all.
I wonder what this marketing campaign looks like to someone who hasn't read the book. I imagine they're confused beyond belief by all the cgi and grey skies and mottled palate. Why is King Kong going after them, that person might ask. Is anyone going to stop and explain the plot to me, they also seem to ponder. It must look like a jumbled mess of pop culture ephemera battling for screen time in a movie that looks as though it's going to clobber you into submission with sensory overload.
Spielberg is an amazing director and his films have managed to maintain an old Hollywood aesthetic that's in short supply these days. This looks like him trying to make a Zack Snyder movie though, and that worries me. Again, I'm probably all frazzled over nothing, and this flick's going to be a total blast, but I can't help but wonder what it would have been like had someone—anyone—else directed it. We'll find out when Ready Player One opens on March 29.
