Now that Sony and Marvel have settled on Tom Holland as their new Spider-Man, it's time to fill out the rest of the cast. And first up is the role of Aunt May, which Variety reports has been offered to Marisa Tomei.
At first blush that might seem crazy. Aunt May has traditionally been considerably older and more matronly. However, she has been trending younger. Tobey Maguire's Aunt May was played by a white-haired Rosemary Harris, who was 75 when the first Spider-Man debuted in 2002. But Andrew Garfield's Aunt May was played by Sally Field, who was only 66 when The Amazing Spider-Man hit theaters in 2012.
Tomei is 5o, believe it or not. When the new Spider-Man comes out in 2017, she'll be 52. Considering she was a crazy hot stripper just seven years ago in The Wrestler, I'd say Sony and Marvel have a cooler, hipper Aunt May in mind—somebody who can better relate to an awkward teenaged Peter Parker.
But that's just speculation. Maybe they'll put her in a white wig and go to town with the old lady makeup.
