Today we're pretty spoiled when it comes to late night talk show options. Jimmy Fallon,Jimmy Kimmel, Conan O'Brien, Craig Ferguson, Chelsea Handler, Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, Andy Cohen—there's something for almost everybody, and it's all pretty damn good.
Of course, late night television wouldn't be what it is today if the current crop of hosts didn't have a genius to inspire them. And, FYI, I'm not talking about Jay Leno. He may have dominated the ratings for 20 years, but David Letterman was the one telling funny jokes and conducting smart, captivating interviews interviews.
Unfortunately, that day we all knew would arrive eventually is finally on the horizon. At the taping of the The Late Show on Thursday afternoon, Letterman announced that he will retire in 2015.
The news was broken by musician Mike Mills of REM fame, who spread the word on Twitter.
The good news is that 2015 is pretty far away. Moreover, thanks to his legendary run, he's leaving us in pretty good hands.
Still, you should probably watch as much Letterman as you can now. His days on the air are now officially numbered.
