No one ever expects the No. 8 seed in the playoffs to make into the second round. Should lightning strike and they do, there is typically no way that they'll make it to the Conference Finals. Should that happen, well, you know their luck has to run out sometime, right?
Not for the L.A. Kings it doesn't.
The Kings got out to an early 1-0 lead on the Devils in the first period Saturday night, but the Devils kept it close all game until they were finally able to tie it up in the third and send it to overtime.
From that point it appeared to be just a matter of time before the Kings would pull out the win. L.A. had 11 shots on goal in OT next to three for the Devils. The period lasted as long as it did because Devils goalie Martin Brodeur is awesome. However, even the awesome have moments where they are human.
Brodeur's came when Jeff Carter made a 32-foot wrist shot to give the Kings the victory, 2-1, and put them two games away from winning the franchise's first Stanley Cup.
The Devils will face the tough task of trying to climb back into the series when it heads out west to Los Angeles for Game Three on Monday at 8 PM ET.
