Director Scott Cooper is an indie film darling who directed Jeff Bridges to his first Oscar in Crazy Heart and managed to wrangle Johnny Depp's only good performance this decade with Black Mass. Bound and determined to be a genre chameleon, Cooper's next film is the pure horror spectacular Antlers, starring Keri Russell and Jesse Plemmons, aka Meth Damon, aka Todd from Breaking Bad.
Russell plays a teacher in a small Oregon town and Plemmons plays her brother, the sheriff. She becomes concerned that one of her students is harboring a dark secret, and as you can tell from this trailer, it's probably far worse than she could have possibly imagined. As you might have noticed, this flick also comes to us from Guillermo Del Toro, who has a full producing credit on the flick, meaning he'll have some actual input into the finished product.
While this seems like quite a stretch for Cooper, this trailer indicates that this is going to be a blissfully dark tale, and Cooper isn't afraid to stare into the heart of darkness. Let's hope this is half as good as the trailer because if it is, we're in for a real treat. Antlers is due in theaters in April 17, 2020.
