2017's Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was the rare reboot/long-delayed sequel that was actually vastly superior to the original. The Rock Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black all turned in hilarious performances as teenagers trapped in adult bodies, attempting to navigate a deadly video game while also dealing with their own teen angst drama.
The film was also a smash hit, grossing over $400 million in North America and just shy of a billion dollars worldwide, making another sequel inevitable. Rather than returning to the well, however, the producers of Jumanji: The Next Level have decided to shake things up a bit by introducing two old men into the equation: Danny DeVito and Danny Glover, who are sucked into the game and inhabit the bodies of The Rock Johnson and Kevin Hart, respectively.
You have to give them credit for trying something radically different, and frankly the prospect of seeing The Rock Johnson do an impression of Danny DeVito for two hours is something that delights me to no end. Yes, the premise has the potential to wear thin, but so did the premise of Welcome to the Jungle, so hopefully they've got some more great stuff in store this time around.
Jumanji: The Next Level hits theaters on December 13, one week before Star Wars Episode IX.
