Arguably the worst character in the original Superman quadrilogy was Lex Luthor's shit heel nephew Lenny Luthor played by Jon Cryer in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Well, the Emmy winning actor now returns to the franchise on the CW's Supergirl, only this time he gets to level up to playing the big bald baddie himself...
Jon Cryer is many things as an actor, but intimidating is not one of them. A decade-plus of weekly emasculation at the hands of Charlie Sheen has made Cryer about as intimidating as Teletubby, so the notion of him playing one of the iconic criminal geniuses in pop culture history is laughable. What, was Michael Cera not available?
I'm not saying that actors can't demonstrate range, but Cryer began his career as a weenie, the discount Anthony Michael Hall of the sub-Brat Pack. I mean, maybe the kids watching this show who have no idea who he is will find him scary and view him as a threat, but he seems to me like the type of dude that constantly gets two for flinching. Though we are in the post-Jesse Eisenberg Lex Luthor world, so maybe he doesn't have to be intimidating anymore. Who can tell?
Cryer makes his debut in the fifteenth episode of the current season, set to air in March. Drink in the full official image below, courtesy of ComingSoon.net...
