What do you do when you're Peter Jackson and all of your contemporaries have directed a comic book movie? Well, you find a way to direct a comic book movie, of course. Or you go back to the Tolkein well for the umpteenth time. These are the decisions you have to make when you're Peter Jackson.
Word on the street is that Jackson is currently trying to decide between taking an active role in Amazon's upcoming Lord of the Rings adaptation or directing a DC comic book movie. It would seem like a slam dunk for Jackson to just return to Middle Earth, but maybe it's time to see someone else's vision of that world. Giving Jackson the keys to his first comic book movie would be a genius move on DC's part, and something they don't make very often.
Jackson would be the star attraction of whatever comic book movie he decides to adapt. And knowing DC, they'll let him do whatever he wants, only to undermine him in post-production and release a totally neutered version of his film to the public. Or something, blah blah blah conspiracy theory nonsense.
Peter Jackson is one of the few big name directors who can draw an audience on name recognition alone. He could make literally any comic book movie he wanted and a substantial portion of the population will show up just to see what he's done. Hell, he could do Brother Power the Geek and it would open to $100 million.
