30 years ago there was a...I guess you'd call them a band...called Wham that ruled the airwaves with their poppy hits. The group consisted of a young George Michael and a dude named Andrew Ridgeley. They liked to prance around in short shorts and sing about girls even though George was much more interested in dudes. In 1984 they decided to come up with a Christmas classic that would be played at malls and Christmas music stations for generations to come. The resulting hit was called LAst Christmas and it tells the tale of heartbreak on Jesus' birthday. Some people love it, while others revile it as the worst Christmas song ever. A radio DJ in Austria named Joe Kohlhofer locked himself in his studio and played the song on a loop for two hours. Some were pleased and others wanted to open a vein. Or simply change the radio station. Whatever.
The song is polarizing. I wish that at Christmastime there was a song that was so universally hated that it brought the world together in a feeling of shared hatred. Maybe if Nickleback ever released a Christmas song.
