As the two biggest stars of the Fox Marvel Mutant Cinematic Gathering, Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds have been playing grab-ass since first appearing together in their respective iconic roles of Wolverine and Deadpool in 2009's abysmal X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Jackman gets to play the nice guy who doesn't rely on naughty words to gain respect, meanwhile Reynolds has embraced his role as constant tormentor of the Aussie star who hung up his claws just when Deadpool had finally gotten a fair shake on screen. It works out well for both men, but now Jackman is turning the tables and giving as good as he's been getting from Reynolds for years.
Framed as a political ad meant to besmirch the "good name" of Ryan Reynolds, Jackman can't help but bask in his new role as bad guy. It's part of what makes Nolan's The Prestige so brilliant, you never saw it coming that Jackman was the bad guy all along.
So yeah, the back and forth between these two can be tiring, but I love it when one of them gets super creative like this. Good stuff, well played Hugh and the team of writers that took your idea and distilled it down to this ad.
Once Upon a Deadpool returns to theaters from December 12-24 only.
