Hopefully next month's Bohemian Rhapsody doesn't leave you 70s rock musician biopic'd out, because next summer, Elton John's biopic Rocketman blasts into theaters with a very similar looking aesthetic. Kingsman star Taron Egerton steps into the glitzy platform heels of the diminutive rocker and even does his own singing in the role.
If you're feeling more than a little sense of déjà vu when you watch this trailer, it's likely because director Dexter Fletcher (Eddie the Eagle) also did some directorial work on Bohemian Rhapsody, stepping in to help finish the film when Bryan Singer got fired. It's probably all just a case of bad timing, but I wouldn't be surprised for these two films to merge in our collective memories years from now.
There's obviously a lot going on in this trailer, and its likely going to cover the height of Elton's 70s fame before he calmed down a bit and reinvented himself in the 80s and again in the 90s. Hopefully Egerton picked up some tips from Elton on the set of Kingsman 2. The cast also includes Jamie Bell as lyricist Bernie Taupin, Richard Madden as Elton's manager and partner John Reid, and Bryce Dallas Howard as Elton's mother Sheila Eileen.
Rocketman hits theaters on May 17, the same day as John Wick 3.
