The more distance I've put between myself and Solo: A Star Wars Story, the more I find myself thinking about the film and how thoroughly not terrible it was. Now that the film is gearing up for its home video release later this month, we're getting our first taste of deleted scenes from the film.
This first deleted scene comes to us courtesy of USA Today, who posted it late yesterday. The scene shows an extended chase through the streets of Corellia from the film's opening. I understand why the scene was deleted, as Ron Howard was clearly trying to get the action of Corellia as quickly as possible, but I found the film's first act substantially more entertaining than the second and third.
I think my biggest issue with the film is that it wasn't closer in spirit to the first act all the way through. It felt like a weird, dirty, sci-fi space adventure before turning into a rote, by-the-numbers origin story. I really do wonder what the film would have looked like had Lord and Miller finished their version, and since we tend to romanticize the versions of films we never got, I'm going to go ahead and guess it would've been more like the first act. But we'll likely never know.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is available on Digital HD one week from today, and on Blu-ray & DVD September 25.
