I've spent a lot of time over the last few weeks fawning over the new Planet of the Apes trilogy, and not without good reason. These films are among the best big budget films being made these days, and this new behind-the-scenes featurette shows off all the hard work that goes into turning humans into apes.

Perhaps the greatest special effect of all in this trilogy has been the work done that Andy Serkis and the team of effects wizards have done creating the character of Caesar. If you had told me ten years ago that a motion capture cgi ape would be the most well-rounded character of the decade, I would have laughed in your face. The joke is on me, however, as Caesar now stands among the most fully developed main characters ever put at the center of a blockbuster trilogy.

You can't help but laugh when you see mild-mannered Andy Serkis flopping around in a spandex suit with dots all over his face, but to paraphrase a famous saying, who cares how the sausage get made? If that's what it takes to create these amazing films, flop away. War for the Planet of the Apes hits theaters on July 14.
