Did you like Get Out but found that it lacked a white protagonist? Then have I got the movie for you! Ready or Not seems like a mash-up of Get Out and the sorely underrated 2013 flick You're Next, with an outsider being assimilated into a family by the playing of some sort of life or death game.
Margot Robbie doppelgänger Samara Weaving stars as a woman who, on the night of her wedding to a wealthy man, finds herself at the mercy of his bloodthirsty family. The thing that makes this similar to both Get Out and especially You're Next is the deft mixing of gory horror violence and humor. The one thing that most extremely violent horror films have in common is that they're a slog to get through, so adding humor into the mix is a good way to shake things up and keep the genre feeling fresh.
There's no guarantee this will be any good, though, as the last movie that co-directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin made was the abysmal 2014 found footage horror flick Devil's Due. This does have a ton of promise, however, so long as it doesn't hedge too closely to another similar horror flick, The Purge.
Ready or Not slots nicely into the late summer mix with an August 23 release date.
