In a new interview with Screen Daily, legendary director Francis Ford Coppola, the genius behind such masterpieces as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, called George Lucas' involvement with the Star Wars saga a "pity."
Taken completely out of context, there are a ton of Star Wars fans out there who would agree with that sentiment. After all, while Lucas may have created the galaxy far, far away, he's also accused of screwing it up with his so-called "special editions" and the oft-derided prequel trilogy.
However, that's not actually what Coppola meant. He wasn't saying it's a pity George Lucas worked so long on Star Wars that he ruined it. He was saying it's a pity that old pal couldn't put his talents to use on other worthy projects.
Here's the actual quote:
I think Star Wars, it's a pity, because George Lucas was a very experimental crazy guy and he got lost in this big production and never got out of it. I still hope that he made so much money out of it that he will just make some little movies. He promises me that he will.
In George defense, though, Revenge of the Sith was actually pretty great.
That's right. I went there.
