Ask around the NASCAR circuit and folks will tell you that Dale Earnhardt Jr. is an all-around nice guy. His nine-year stretch of being named the Sprint Cup Series Most Popular Driver is proof enough of that. However, all the nice-ness has not been able to get him what he has wanted for the last 143 races--a win.
On Sunday at Michigan the streak finally ended when he took the checkered flag at the 2012 Quicken Loans 400 at the Michigan International Speedway.
Unlike so many near misses over the last four years there was no question that he was going to take this one. Dale Jr. finished 5.393 seconds ahead of Tony Stewart (second place). For you non-race fans that's a lot.
After so many near wins he was still nervous, even with the big lead:
"I was in there just going crazy. I just knew I was going to come around the next corner and see a piece of metal in the racetrack. I just was waiting on something to happen. That was terrifying."
You can rest easy Dale. Nothing happened this time. Now how long will it take for you to get the next win?
