TV & FILM

If the upcoming Transformers spin-off movie Bumblebee has one big thing going for it, it's the nostalgic character design of the film. Fans of the 80s cartoon and original toy line have to be thrilled to see the classic character designs come to life in this new flick set, appropriately enough, in the late 80s.
This bizarre "extended TV spot" features a lot of the classic characters in action and then there's a McDonald's commercial and a bunch of other strange stuff after that. For my money, the other reason to have a modicum of hope this will be good is that it comes to us from the creator of Kubo and the Two Strings, LAIKA CEO Travis Knight.
It's good for two reasons: First, he gets to make all the money and spend it on LAIKA movies. Secondly, he can maybe infuse some of the themes from his previous films into this one, giving it more depth than any other film in the franchise—spoiler alert, it's not a far climb.
So go see Bumblebee when it comes out. It'll probably be aimed more at the adults who grew up with the franchise than anyone else. It rolls into theaters on December 21 along with Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns.
