Fresh off of winning an Oscar for her role in La La Land, Emma Stone is chasing awards season glory once more by playing tennis legend Billie Jean King in the upcoming film Battle of the Sexes. The film dramatizes the legendary 1973 tennis match between King and Bobby Riggs, played here by Steve Carell, re-teaming him with his Little Miss Sunshine co-directors Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton—before they run off to direct Captain Marvel.
While there's obviously a lot of comedy in this trailer, the film's subject matter and its late September release date lead me to believe that FOX Searchlight thinks they've got an Oscar contender on their hands. It admittedly does tick off a lot of boxes, but it's probably more the marketing than the film itself. I think these roles have been perfectly cast, at least from a performance standpoint—who knows if either of them can swing a racket worth a damn, but that's what movie magic is for.
If you've seen the segment about this match on ESPN's Outside the Lines, you already know the conspiracy theory surrounding Riggs' reason for participating in the match, though this film looks like it might be avoiding that altogether. If not, I'd highly recommend checking it out. It'll be a great primer for this flick, due in theaters on September 22.
