If you didn't know otherwise, hearing a title like The Kitchen and seeing a cast that includes Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss might lead you to believe it's some sort of wacky comedy about a cooking competition or something. However, The Kitchen is based on an 8-issue DC Vertigo limited comics series from 2014 set in the world of organized crime in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York City in the 1970s.
Much like last year's brilliantly underrated Widows, the film centers around a trio of women who take up their husbands' life of crime when their men get pinched. McCarthy, Haddish, and Moss are all capable actresses and they seem right at home in this period piece. The film also has an aces supporting cast including Domhnall Gleeson, Margo Martindale, Common, and the always great Bill Camp, who looks particularly terrifying here as the boss of a Brooklyn Italian crime family.
While you'd likely never know it was based on a comic book, the good news is that your lady friend won't know either, and she'll definitely agree to see this with you, especially considering that at least two of her five favorite actresses are in it. The Kitchen blasts its way into theaters on August 9.
