TV & FILM
bill-swift - October 4, 2014
Hollywood is completely out of original ideas. Has been for years. That is why literally every movie they make these days is either a remake, reboot, adaptation, or sequel. That's right, literally. (Okay figuratively.) And with the emergence of the international market as a real driving force in the movie business, it should as absolutely no surprise that "they" (vague term for Hollywood elites) would want to turn Baywatch, the most popular television show of all time into a movie. Lord knows they've turned lesser shows into movies.
However, for some reason the Holy Grail of TV-to-film adaptations has failed to materialize...until now. The project is officially back on at Paramount, and they've got a big, bankable star to headline: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
Hollywood Reporterfirst broke the story, but Johnson himself confirmed it last night with a tweet.
Here's the really good news, though. Justin Melan (Bad Teacher 2) will write the script while comedy writing team Sean Anders and John Morris (We're the Millers) will direct. That suggests the Baywatch movie will be more like 21 Jump Street the movie than Miami Vice the movies—which is to say, funny and satirical.
The project is still in development right now, so there isn't even a target release date. But I'm sure we're all looking forward to meeting the rest of the cast, right?
