In the realm of sequels the world doesn't really need, Blade Runner 2049 has to be at or near the top of the list. However, after finding out that Arrival and Sicario director Denis Villeneuve was directing and now having laid eyes on this first trailer for the film, I'm willing to admit that I may have been too quick to judge this sequel unnecessary.
Ridley Scott's Blade Runner remains one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, and its influence can be felt in everything from Minority Report to Attack of the Clones. It's also one of the most tinkered with films ever made, with no fewer than five separate cuts of the film having been released, each one more confusing and convoluted than the last—word of advice to noobs, just watch the theatrical cut. It's got issues, but none as glaring as the other cuts that have been released.
Nevertheless, I have to admit that I'm now excited to see what this film is all about, despite the presence of Jared Leto. That's really got to count for something and is a strong indicator of how good this trailer is making the film look. The rest of the cast is pretty fantastic though, with Harrison Ford returning to join Baby Goose and Robin Wright. We'll all find out one way or the other just how essential Blade Runner 2049 is when the film hits theaters on October 6.
