Recently, someone took the Taylor Swift-Kim Kardashian-Kanye West feud to a new level: Wikipedia. An unnamed editor changed the very first line of Taylor's entry to read "Taylor Alison Swift is an American singer-songwriter fraud that got dragged to the grave by successful businesswoman Kim Kardashian."
Who did it? That's both the strength and weakness of Wikipedia. Anyone with a free account can add, alter, or delete any part of the site. Other members and paid moderators usually correct the record -- eventually. Until then, we all get to see some ridiculous ideas sneaked into the "Encyclopedia of Everything."
Here are some of best hacks, pranks, hoaxes, and edits in Wikipedia's history.
It's not clear of if this prankster had a bone to pick (get it?) with Hemingway, or the book's real author Eric Hill, or sappy children's lit in general. In fact, it's possible the person responsible is Hill himself, hoping to build some buzz with a funny entry. Either way, I would totally read a children's book written by Ernest Hemingway.
And that's only the beginning. In the Kafkaesque tale created by this Wiki jokester, once Gary Oldman turns back into a human, everyone else turns into Gary Oldman -- the doctor, his mother, his father, and finally the police officer who comes to investigate the murder-suicide of Gary's parents, which was caused by a "circle of distrust." A mind-blowing tale. Can you disprove it? Never mind...Gary's mother was alive as of 2015.
Just a few months after the debut of the iPhone in 2007, Apple released the iPod Touch. This device had many of the same features and was called "the iPhone without the phone." It was revolutionary technology that influences almost every mobile device owned by everyone on Earth. But some people weren't happy with the iPod Touch. One of those people, rather than change the text, decided to upload a featured image that made his point.
Earlier this year, D'Angelo Russell videotaped Lakers teammate Nick Young admitting he cheated on his fiancée, Iggy Azalea...and then released the video to the world. Some took Young's side, claiming his privacy had been invaded; some took Russell's, crediting him for exposing a cheat. The debate spilled over onto Russell's Wikipedia page, where a Young partisan changed the player's name, photo caption, position, and nationality. "Point Rat" is pretty clever -- and sounds like a Pixar movie about a rodent that plays basketball. Which needs to happen.
Maybe the most victimized page in all of Wikipedia's 5.2 million English-language entries is Nickleback's. One hater even put together a YouTube video that traces the various jokes added to the page over the years. Most of them are pretty dumb: Nickelback sucks, Nickelback sucks cock, Nickelback is gay (as if being gay means you can't write music?). But this entry gets my vote as the best, for its specificity and creativity.
Not every act of Wikipedia vandalism is an act of snark or hate. Some people just want to have some fun. Here, an editor adds a little-known fact to American history that even Hamilton overlooked. It makes sense that King George would only give the toys to officers, who often had land and titles, and not to the lower-class soldiers. This sort of elitism -- and Hamilton's dope beats -- would lead to his downfall.
Wasn't that when the Republican National Convention took place? This edit checks out.
