Hollywood is not known for being scientifically accurate in their films. For the most part they are written by people who haven't taken a science class in twenty years and even then they weren't paying attention. Screenwriters are also lazy and the idea that they do any research is unlikely. That's why you get movies that are so scientifically wrong that it makes real scientists have seizures. One such movie is "The Core" which relies more on the chiseled jaw of Aaron Eckhart rather than anything even resembling reality.
The movie starts off with a series of serious disturbances alerting the world's governments that something is wrong. What happened is that the core of the Earth stopped rotating on its own and the planet will soon die. So, they employ Aaron Eckhart, who is a sciency guy and Stanley Tucci, to drill to the center of the Earth and restart the core rotating with some strategically placed nuclear bombs. You know, like you do. They get in a giant drill car thing driven by Hilary Swank that is made out of Unobtanium, an indestructible metal. They drill for what seems like years and do their blowy up thing and save the day.
I'm not even going to touch on how completely and totally stupid the main plot is. That much is obvious to anyone with half a brain. The thing that gets me is that this POS has a pretty decent cast. Did they lose a bet? Why would they do this movie? Oh yeah, money.
