Almost from its inception, HBO has been one of the best places to catch outstanding documentary films, and their latest looks like no exception. Jason Hehir, the man behind such excellent ESPN 30 for 30s like "Down in the Valley" and "The '85 Bears" now sets his sights on the biggest name, literally, in wrestling history: Andre the Giant.
Featuring interviews with his contemporaries like Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair, as well as his Hollywood pals—namely Arnold Schwarzenegger and the cast of The Princess Bride—this doc shines a light on the struggles and triumphs of the gentle giant who hailed from Grenoble in the French Alps. As someone who grew up in the golden age of the WWF—in other words, pre-Ultimate Warrior—I absolutely cannot wait for this doc. Despite Andre playing a heel for most of his wrestling career, he was always one of my favorites, and his Wrestlemania bouts—all the way up to VII when he made a triumphant return to save Big Boss Man from the clutches of Mr. Perfect, Curt Henning—are the stuff of legends.
HBO subscribers, set your DVRs for April 10 when this doc debuts, and the rest of us should start hounding our friends for their HBO Go passwords shortly thereafter. This is one you won't want to miss.
