After a 2019 that saw all three of their releases gross over a billion dollars worldwide, Marvel Studios has a pretty rough road ahead in 2020. That's not an indictment of their content offerings for next year so much as it's an indication that the studio may have finally reached its peak. While there are some long-awaited sequels due in 2021 and beyond, 2020's two MCU flicks are The Eternals and Black Widow, the first solo outing for Scarlett Johansson's recently deceased heroine.
Black Widow, in fact, is due in theaters in five short months, so it's about time that we've finally got our first trailer for the film, dropped in the middle of the night last night by Marvel. The film follows Natasha as she returns to Russia after the events of Captain America: Civil War, reuniting her with two other female assassins played by Florence Pugh and Rachel Weisz, as well as Red Guardian, played by David Harbour.
While it's folly to underestimate Marvel's ability to deliver fun and entertaining films that don't look or feel like they'll be either of those things, it's more than a little difficult to get excited for what amounts to a one-shot involving a character whose arc was completed last year. Black Widow hits theaters on May 1, 2020.
